Anda tentu telah mengenal command line C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SHELL32.DLL, USER.EXE/EXITWINDOWS , untuk mematikan Windows 9x lewat shortcut. Di Windows XP dan Vista, command line itu tidak berlaku lagi.
Tetapi kita masih bisa membuat shortcut untuk shutdown, restart, dan logoff. Caranye begini:
1. Buat shorcut baru dengan klik kanan di desktop dan pilih [New] > [Shortcut ...]
2. Pada field Location of the items ketiklah:
a. C:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe /s untuk shutdown
b. C:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe /r untuk restart
c. C:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe /l, atau
C:\windows\system32\logoff.exe /r untuk untuk logoff.
3. Klik [Next] lalu tulis nama untuk masing-masing shortcut
4. Klik [Finish]
